Goodwin Liu Elected Chair of AAAS Board of Directors

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences has announced the election of Goodwin Liu of the California Supreme Court as the next chair of its board of directors.

The Academy, founded in 1780, honors excellence and convenes leaders from all disciplines to examine new ideas, address issues of importance, and work together “to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.” Liu was elected to the Academy in 2019 and has served on its Committee on Anti-Racism, as chair of the Membership Section Panel on Law, as a member of the Commission on Reimagining Our Academy, and, since 2022, as a member on the Board of Trust.

“I am honored and delighted to serve as the next chair of the Academy board,” said Liu in a press release. “Since the founding of our republic, the Academy has recognized and celebrated the excellence of scholars and leaders across the entire range of disciplines, including the arts, humanities, sciences, law, business, and medicine. And it has played an important role in bringing knowledge, inquiry, and learning to bear on the most pressing problems facing our nation and the world. I look forward to advancing this vital mission in close collaboration with the Academy’s board, staff, and increasingly diverse members."

Liu was elected to The American Law Institute in 2008 and to ALI Council in 2013. He was previously a professor of law and associate dean at UC Berkeley School of Law before joining the California Supreme Court in 2011.

Liu will begin his role as chair effective July 1. Read the full announcement here.
