Erik Knutsen Unpacks Insurance Law’s Broad Reach

May 05, 2025

Erik Knutsen of Queen’s University Faculty of Law is featured in a recent article from Queen’s Law highlighting his internationally recognized expertise in insurance law, torts, and civil litigation. Professor Knutsen’s research is widely cited by courts across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, offering practical guidance on how insurance law applies in real-world contexts—including at life’s most difficult moments.

In the article, Knutsen discusses the complexities of interpreting insurance policies, the evolution of risk and coverage, and the critical intersections between insurance law and end-of-life issues. His scholarship and teaching continue to shape the field, helping courts, practitioners, and professionals navigate the intricacies of insurance law with clarity and fairness.

Knutsen will also be teaching a session on insurance law as part of the Queen’s Law End-of-Life Law Certificate program, running June 2–5.

Kneedler Retires After 160 SCOTUS Arguments

After presenting his 160th—and final—argument before the U.S. Supreme Court, ALI member Edwin S. Kneedler, the longest-serving deputy solicitor general in modern history, received a rare and emotional tribute: a standing ovation from the justices and audience alike. Known for his unmatched legal acumen, nonpartisan integrity, and commitment to the rule of law, Kneedler spent more than four decades representing the United States before the Court. His retirement marks the end of an era, and his legacy stands in sharp contrast to growing concerns about politicization in government legal work. Described by colleagues across administrations as a "national treasure" and the "embodiment of the government lawyer ideal," Kneedler leaves behind a legacy of quiet excellence, humility, and unwavering public service.
