Jon S. Tigar has been a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California since January 2013. Before that, he served for 11 years as a trial judge on the Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland, California. Prior to that, he was an associate and then a partner at Keker & Van Nest in San Francisco; a trial attorney with the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office; and an associate in the litigation department of Morrison & Foerster. He clerked for the Hon. Robert S. Vance on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Judge Tigar previously served as an Adviser to the Restatement of the Law Third, Torts: Liability for Economic Harm and now serves as an Adviser to the Restatement (Third) of Torts: Defamation and Privacy.
Judge Tigar formerly served on the Ninth Circuit Jury Instructions Committee as well as the California Judicial Council, Advisory Committee on Civil Jury Instructions. He recently completed a three-year term as the Judicial Representative to the American Bar Association's Section of Antitrust Law, and served as Co-Chair of the Section of Litigation's Federal Practice Task Force. He is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
