Paul L. Friedman has served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia since 1994. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Friedman practiced at the law firm of White & Case for 18 years and was Managing Partner of its Washington office. He previously was an Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States and an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

Judge Friedman was elected to the ALI in June 1984 and was elected to the Council in October 1998. He served as ALI Secretary from 2013 until 2022. He is an Adviser on the Principles of the Law, Compliance and Enforcement project and the Restatement of the Law, Constitutional Torts project. He was previously an Adviser on the Model Penal Code: Sentencing project.

Judge Friedman served as a law clerk for Judge Aubrey E. Robinson, Jr., of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and Judge Roger Robb of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He is a member of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
