Mary Smith Receives University of Chicago’s 2024 Diversity Leadership Award
The University of Chicago has named Mary L. Smith a recipient of the 2024 Diversity Leadership Awards. The award recognizes faculty, staff, students, and alumni who have shown a sustained commitment to fostering justice and equality.
“The 2024 Diversity Leadership Award honorees personify the University of Chicago’s commitment to the assemblage of diverse voices, perspectives and talents in pursuit of excellence,” said Waldo E. Johnson Jr., vice provost for diversity and inclusion. “The honorees inspire us to advance our commitment to diversity and inclusion as fellow faculty, staff, students and alumni of our University community and beyond.”
Smith served during the Obama administration, first on the transition team in the Department of Justice and later as chief executive of the Indian Health Service. She is currently president of the American Bar Association, the first Native American to hold the top leadership position.
