The American Law Institute (ALI), the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and improve the law, today announced that it elected six new members to its Council. The Council, a group of prominent judges, lawyers, and legal scholars with a broad range of specialties and experiences, is the governing body of the ALI. The new members, who join 50 others on the Council, are:
- Michele C. Kane, Associate General Counsel, The Walt Disney Company,
Burbank, CA - Carolyn B. Kuhl, Judge, Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles,
Los Angeles, CA - Carol F. Lee, General Counsel, Taconic Capital Advisors LP, New York, NY
- Daniel B. Rodriguez, Dean, Northwestern University School of Law, Chicago, IL
- Robert H. Sitkoff, John L. Gray Professor of Law, Harvard Law School, Cambridge, MA
- Steven O. Weise, Partner, Proskauer Rose LLP, Los Angeles, CA
"It is a great pleasure to welcome these eminent and talented individuals to the Council," said ALI President Roberta Cooper Ramo. "I know they will contribute significantly to the Council's vital work of determining the projects and programs the ALI undertakes, and ensuring that the ALI's intellectual work continues to be of the highest quality. Their wisdom and experience will greatly benefit the Council and the ALI."
Council members are eligible to serve three five-year terms, and transition rules govern those who were on the Council in May 2007 when the term limits became effective. Thus, each year several long-serving Council members transfer to emeritus status. Shirley S. Abrahamson, William M. Burke, Herma Hill Kay, Martin Lipton, Robert H. Mundheim, and Michael Traynor moved into that esteemed class as of May 24, 2012. They will remain actively involved in the Council's work.
