The American Law Institute (ALI), the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize and improve the law, has appointed Stephanie Middleton as deputy director after a nationwide search. Middleton previously served as staff director and general counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Senator Arlen Specter, Ranking Member. Middleton succeeds Elena A. Cappella after almost two decades of service to the Institute.
ALI’s Executive Committee unanimously approved director Lance Liebman’s recommendation that Middleton be appointed deputy director. In her new position, Middleton will oversee the day-to-day operations of ALI’s Philadelphia headquarters and support and advise the director on the Institute’s law reform work.
“The breadth of Stephanie’s legal experience ideally qualifies her for heading our Philadelphia office, as it includes working in a law firm, in the corporate sector and in both the executive and legislative branches of government,” said Liebman. “ALI President Roberta Ramo and I look forward to working daily with Stephanie as the Institute pursues its current law reform agenda and seeks new domestic and transnational subjects that would benefit from our recommendations.”
Middleton has 29 years of experience in the legal industry. She served as chief counsel for litigation at CIGNA Corporation, a global health-services firm headquartered in Philadelphia, and worked for more than two years as deputy general counsel for Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge. Middleton began her legal career as an associate at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia.
Middleton received her B.A. from Yale University, class of 1972, and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, class of 1981. She currently resides in Media, Pa. with her husband.
