ALI’s Second Century Campaign Receives $250,000 Gift

The American Law Institute is thrilled to announce the receipt of a $250,000 gift from ALI President David F. Levi, which will help ensure that ALI has the resources necessary for its next century of clarifying, modernizing, and otherwise improving he law. Founded in 1923, ALI will celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2023.

“As ALI’s director, I have had the enormous privilege of working closely with David as ALI’s president for nearly five years,” said Richard L. Revesz. “Each day, David brings to the table truly extraordinary leadership skills and puts them in the service of strengthening the ALI. David has also been a strong philanthropic supporter of our work. Years ago, he established the Daniel J. Meltzer Fund, which was created to provide the current and future ALI directors with the resources necessary to execute special initiatives that will further the Institute’s important and influential work. This gift to ALI’s Second Century Campaign moves us one step closer to our goal of securing the ALI’s future. I’m enormously grateful for it.”

David became The American Law Institute’s 10th president in 2017. However, his work with ALI began long before he was elected to lead the Institute. David was elected to ALI in 1991 and to the Council in 2005. He previously served as an Adviser to ALI’s Federal Judicial Code Revision and Aggregate Litigation projects and is currently serving as an Adviser on the Principles of the Law, Student Sexual Misconduct: Procedural Frameworks for Colleges and Universities, as well as on numerous ALI committees.

In addition to his role as ALI president, David is currently the Levi Family Professor of Law and Judicial Studies and Director of the Bolch Judicial Institute. He was previously the dean of Duke Law School from 2007 to 2018. Prior to this appointment, he was the chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California with chambers in Sacramento. He was appointed U.S. attorney by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 and a U.S. district judge by President George H. W. Bush in 1990. It was during this time that he was elected to the Institute. Gifts made to ALI’s Second Century Campaign will allow ALI to continue to focus on its Restatements, Principles, and Model Codes that have been identified as areas in need of clarification or reform; launch projects that examine areas of the law not yet studied by ALI that are at the forefront of legal discourse; coordinate legal rules and facilitate cooperation across borders by working with organizations in other countries to create transnational legal principles; and eliminate barriers to participation in our work, ensuring that our membership remains diverse and broad, and that there are no financial obstacles to participating in our process.
