Election of Council Members Set for Monday, May 17

On the recommendation of the Nominating Committee, the ALI Council has nominated seven candidates for election to the Council for a five-year term by the Institute’s membership at the Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., on Monday, May 17. Five current Council members have been nominated for reelection to a five-year term.

The proposed new Council members include one judge, two lawyers practicing in large firms, one small-firm attorney, one academic, one former corporate general counsel, and an attorney for a nonprofit organization. The seven candidates range in age from 39 to 62, with an average age of just over 53. The new nominees are:

This year, the following Council members have taken emeritus status or will take it at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting: Philip S. Anderson, Bennett Boskey, Michael Boudin, Gerhard Casper, George Clemon Freeman, Jr., Pierre N. Leval, William Reece Smith, Jr., and Herbert P. Wilkins.

If the 12 candidates recommended by the Nominating Committee are elected by the membership at the Opening Session on May 17, then at the close of the Annual Meeting, Council membership will stand at 57, with 23 Council emeriti. ALI’s bylaws provide that the Council must have 42 to 65 members; there is no limit on the number of emeriti.
