Election of Council Members Set for Monday, May 17
On the recommendation of the Nominating Committee, the ALI Council has nominated seven candidates for election to the Council for a five-year term by the Institute’s membership at the Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., on Monday, May 17. Five current Council members have been nominated for reelection to a five-year term.
The proposed new Council members include one judge, two lawyers practicing in large firms, one small-firm attorney, one academic, one former corporate general counsel, and an attorney for a nonprofit organization. The seven candidates range in age from 39 to 62, with an average age of just over 53. The new nominees are:
- Anton G. Hajjar, Washington, D.C. Mr. Hajjar, a principal at O’Donnell, Schwartz & Anderson, represents unions and union workers. He has actively participated in the Members Consultative Group (MCG) for Restatement Third, Employment Law, since the beginning of the project.
- Gail K. Hillebrand, San Francisco, CA. Ms. Hillebrand is senior attorney at Consumers Union, where she manages the credit and finance team of advocates and engages in legislative and administrative advocacy. She has long been active on the UCC projects and serves currently on the UCC Article 9 Review Committee. She also served on the MCG for ALI’s Principles of the Law of Software Contracts.
- Judith A. Miller, Chevy Chase, MD. Ms. Miller recently left the Bechtel Group where she was Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Previously, she was a partner at Williams & Connolly. She also served as General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Defense (1994-2000). She is a member of the ALI Outreach Committee and past member of the Special Committee on Institute Size.
- Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, Oakland, CA. Judge Rogers is on the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda. She is a current member of the ALI Outreach Committee and is on the MCG for two Restatement Third projects: Employment Law and Restitution and Unjust Enrichment.
- Marsha E. Simms, New York, NY. Ms. Simms is a partner in the banking and finance group of the corporate department at Weil, Gotshal & Manges. She is a member of the MCG for ALI’s Legal and Economic Principles of World Trade Law. She also participated in the recent Critical Issues Summit cosponsored by ALI-ABA and is a member of ALI-ABA’s Commercial Law Advisory Group.
- Catherine T. Struve, Philadelphia, PA. At the University of Pennsylvania Law School since 2000, Professor Struve teaches in the areas of civil procedure, federal courts, and federal Indian law. She was an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. She joined the MCG for ALI’s Principles of the Law of Aggregate Litigation project and was one of a dozen outstanding young scholars invited by the ALI Director to a special conference held in 2008.
- David K. Y. Tang, Seattle, WA. The Managing Partner, Asia, at K&L Gates, Mr. Tang’s practice focuses on foreign investment, cross-border financings, mergers and acquisitions, and real-property-related transactions, and he has had extensive experience in the Greater China market. He recently chaired the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and is a prior President of the American Bar Foundation. He has also served as Chair of the ABA section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law. He joined the MCGs for Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments and Principles of the Law of Nonprofit Organizations.
The Council has nominated each of the following current Council members for reelection to the Council: - José I. Astigarraga, Miami, FL. A founding partner of Astigarraga Davis Mullins & Grossman, now known as Astigarraga Davis, Mr. Astigarraga focuses his practice on international arbitration and litigation.
- Amelia H. Boss, Philadelphia, PA. The Trustee Professor of Law at Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law, Professor Boss teaches courses in commercial law and bankruptcy.
- N. Lee Cooper, Birmingham, AL. Mr. Cooper is a shareholder of Maynard Cooper & Gale and Chairman Emeritus of the firm’s Litigation and Arbitration sections.
- George H. T. Dudley, St. Thomas, U.S. VI. Mr. Dudley is a partner in the law firm of Dudley, Topper and Feuerzeig, where he practices in the areas of banking and finance, business, real property, and management labor law.
- Carolyn Dineen King, Houston, TX. Judge King is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and served as its Chief Judge from 1999 to January 2006.
This year, the following Council members have taken emeritus status or will take it at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting: Philip S. Anderson, Bennett Boskey, Michael Boudin, Gerhard Casper, George Clemon Freeman, Jr., Pierre N. Leval, William Reece Smith, Jr., and Herbert P. Wilkins.
If the 12 candidates recommended by the Nominating Committee are elected by the membership at the Opening Session on May 17, then at the close of the Annual Meeting, Council membership will stand at 57, with 23 Council emeriti. ALI’s bylaws provide that the Council must have 42 to 65 members; there is no limit on the number of emeriti.
