50 Years Ago at the Annual Meeting…

The Institute’s 37th Annual Meeting was held from Wednesday through Saturday, May 18-21, 1960, at the Mayflower Hotel. On the agenda were drafts for the Model Penal Code (Reporter Herbert Wechsler), the Restatement Second of Conflict of Laws (Reporter Willis L. M. Reese), the Restatement Second of Torts (Reporter William L. Prosser), Foreign Relations Law of the United States (Reporter Adrian S. Fisher), and Federal Taxation (Reporter Stanley S. Surrey). After ALI President Harrison Tweed called the Meeting to order, Chief Justice Earl Warren addressed the members at the opening session. Director Herbert F. Goodrich reported to the members that the Institute had enlarged its premises on South 36th St. in Philadelphia.

In 1960, the Institute’s membership stood at 1480. The cost of the Annual Dinner, for which the Hon. Charles Wyzanski, Jr., was the principal speaker, was $7.50, “not including cocktails but including tips.” Attending the Council Reception at the Mayflower would set members back $2.
